Client Stories

Katherine Sauter of Salinas has been getting home-delivered meals for about four years. “It is nice to have the meals all ready cooked and frozen. They are so attractive and with a microwave it only takes a few minutes to heat them. I like to have variety, especially the German and Italian meals.” Katherine looks forward to Tuesdays when her meals are delivered. Because she lives alone, it is nice to see the volunteers, who she says are always very pleasant.
At 92, Katherine says she is active, but several years ago she fell and injured her hand badly so she was unable to cook or do dishes. She called Meals on Wheels to help out. “I think more men should know how delicious the meals are. They are healthy, tasty, and they help depression.”
Katherine was born in Wisconsin, came to California when she was 21 years old, and has lived in Salinas for fifty-seven years. After moving to California she studied and became a registered nurse. She worked as a hospital nurse, a Girl Scout nurse, and a nurse at Hartnell College. She and her husband had three daughters and a son. She now has six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
