Volunteer Stories

Edith Tarr and Arlo Bartholomew are ready to deliver meals.
Edith Tarr of Salinas has been a volunteer with Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley since 1985! Edie has delivered meals for 24 years because she loves to help people and enjoys meeting new people. She started volunteering with her father, Don, and her twin sister, Judy, and delivered meals with them for many years until they passed away in the mid-1990’s. Edie now works with Arlo Bartholomew to deliver meals in Salinas.
Arlo describes Meals on Wheels as one of the best services any community can maintain. “Just to know that if ever I would need the meals they would be available to me.” Arlo has been delivering meals for over five years.
Arlo and her granddaughter, Emily Faro, started delivering meals for Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley in 1994 when Emily was only ten years old, because they decided they needed to give back to their community. “Knowing that I am helping another person that has a need and seeing the smiles on their faces and getting to know who they are” is the most rewarding thing about volunteering.
In addition to volunteering for Meals on Wheels, Arlo works as a pharmacy tech for Longs/CVS. Both Arlo and Edie are active in their church, United Methodist.
